There’s been a real buzz around Kilminorth lately, quite literally, as we’ve been celebrating Bees’ Needs Week and everything our little colony has brought to life here.
What began as a quiet passion project has grown into something magical, with our bees now playing a vital role in our landscape, our sustainability journey, and even the special memories our guests take home. This special week has given us a chance to reflect on that journey, share it with you, and toast the magic of TAS Honey – our very own honey, made right here on site.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of Kilminorth. We’re constantly exploring ways to work with nature, rather than around it. From energy-conscious accommodation to thoughtful land management, every choice is guided by respect for the land. Bringing in bees felt like such a natural extension of that ethos – but it actually happened by surprise.
On 20th June last year, a swarm discovered on our grounds became the start of it all. In a deeply moving twist, that was the very same day Jayne’s beloved dad passed away – a man who had always wanted bees and inspired Jayne’s intention to one day keep a hive in his honour. Ralph, supported by his own dad (a passionate local beekeeper), caught the swarm and created that first hive as a heartfelt tribute.
What started as one hive has now blossomed into around eight thriving colonies in just a year. Ralph’s passion has taken on a life of its own – he’s joined the Bee Society, learned to rear queens, and now manages the hives with extraordinary dedication. The queens each have their own story too: Queen Jayne, Queen Julie, and Queen Beth (named after his girlfriend). Recently, Queen Jayne even flew the nest, making room for Queen Jayne II.
Ralph’s journey is as inspiring as the honey itself. Still busy with hot tubs, the pool, and general duties, he also pours his heart into beekeeping – learning, caring, and growing every day. His love and energy have helped shape what TAS Honey has become.
About that name – TAS.
In Cornish, “TAS” means Dad. The name is deeply personal, chosen as a tribute to two very special men: Jayne’s dad, who is no longer with us, and Ralph’s dad, a true Cornishman and proud local of Looe. Their legacies live on in every jar.
TAS Honey isn’t just a label. It’s a living blend of tradition, love, and connection to the land – bottled into something raw, real, and deeply meaningful. Each jar captures the character, humour, and strength of the dads behind the name, and the values they passed down.
But beyond the story, TAS is also really good honey. This is pure, unfiltered, unprocessed honey, made entirely by our bees from the pollen of the surrounding Cornish countryside. There are no added syrups or sweeteners; just the natural, golden goodness nature intended. Every spoonful carries the essence of Kilminorth: the wild blooms, the shifting seasons, and the gentle energy of our land.
It’s the kind of honey that feels good to eat and even better to gift. Guests love drizzling it over toast in the morning, stirring it into tea after a day of exploring, or taking jars home as a sweet reminder of their stay. It’s simple, but incredibly special – and a true taste of Kilminorth.
One of our favourite ways to share TAS Honey is through our weddings. We now offer mini jars as wedding favours. It’s a thoughtful touch that fits perfectly into Kilminorth celebrations. They make beautiful additions to place settings or welcome hampers, and they’re always met with big smiles. After all, love is sweet – but Kilminorth honey is sweeter. There’s something magical about guests taking home a little jar of something made on-site, by our bees, with real meaning behind it.
Of course, you don’t have to be at a wedding (or even staying with us!) to enjoy TAS Honey. If you’re here on-site, you can buy a jar directly from reception. And if you’re further afield, you can order online and enjoy a taste of Kilminorth from wherever you are.
Bees’ Needs Week has been the ultimate celebration of all of this. It’s reminded us of the power of small things: a single bee, a spoonful of honey, a quiet corner of Kilminorth that suddenly becomes alive with purpose.
We’re continuing to build on this journey – supporting our bees, expanding their space, and doing all we can to create a home that works in harmony with nature. From reducing waste to protecting local species, sustainability is an ever-evolving conversation. And our bees are a big, beautiful part of it.
So, whether you’ve followed along on our socials all week or you’re just discovering TAS Honey for the first time, thank you for being part of the buzz. We’re unbelievably proud of how far we’ve come – and we can’t wait to keep sharing the story, the sweetness, and the heart behind every jar.
Because this isn’t just about honey. It’s about legacy, love, and the quiet magic that only nature can create.
